27All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. 26If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. 1 Corinthians 12:27,26 NLT

In His infinite wisdom, God clearly designed some creatures to live alone. For example, bears, rhinoceroses, platypuses, skunks (no surprise) and leopards generally prefer to live and hunt in solitude. Mating and child-rearing force these species to cooperate, but as soon as their little ones are self-sufficient, the parents generally return to their go-it-alone life.
But the majority of God’s creatures are social. Dolphins live together in highly complex hierarchies, fish create schools, birds flock, whales form pods, elephants parade, canines hunt in packs and herbivores form herds to protect themselves from carnivores. Insects form hives, a grove of aspen trees form one large organism joined by their roots, while tiny corals form huge reefs.
And God clearly designed humans to work together. Being called a “loner” is considered an insult. One of the worst punishments a prisoner can undergo is solitary confinement. Babies in an orphanage that are perfunctorily fed and clothed, but not cuddled and loved, wither both physically and spiritually.
And Jesus’ church takes this “working together” business to an even higher plane. The scriptures repeatedly emphasize how much we need each other. Real Christianity ONLY happens in real community. True spirituality can only be accomplished by sharing our fears, needs, complaints and love with each other. Watching a live stream of a mega-church worship service is a very poor substitute for the real thing.
This weekend at Trinity Downtown, we’ll continue our sermon series that explores how sharing life together can put our spiritual growth on steroids. If you are feeling lonely or unimportant, come find your true purpose and celebrate God’s unconditional love for you in our contemporary service on Saturday at 5:00 pm, and/or the traditional worship services on Sunday at 8:15 am and 10:50 am. Your kids won’t want to miss our “Kingdom Quest” pre-school and student gatherings, and you’ll enjoy making new friends and learning more about your faith in our expanded array of adult bible study classes, all held at 9:30 am on Sunday.
Trinity’s “Alpha” course is continuing on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm. It’s not too late to invite a friend or neighbor to join, and please continue asking God to bring hungry hearts to experience His grace and love through the Alpha course.
